The world of Gnomes/Gnomettes:
As by-products of growing up in the 1980s and 90s, my husband and I discovered, in a great date night conversation, our mutual love of the Nickolodean show The World of David the Gnome.
(Trivia: the series is narrated by Christopher Plummer from the Sound of Musicand the voice of David the Gnome is provided by Tom Bosley of Happy Days.)
If you’ve never had the opportunity to see the show, especially through the magical eyes of a child, we offer our condolences.
According to this site the animated series was summed up this way:
“The World of David the Gnome” was based on the world famous children’s books The Gnomes and The Secret of the Gnomesby Dutch authors Rien Poortvliet and Wil Huygen. David the Gnome, and his wife Lisa, were peace loving gnomes who lived in a tree. David would travel around on the back of his trusty fox, Swift, who he would summon by whistling to help sick animals and gnomes and other mythical creatures with his medical experties.
I love that these kind and gentle gnomes were pro-traveling, anti-materialist, pacifist, intuitive healers who lived peacefully and respectfully in nature.
When deciding about my blog name, incorporating their mythical legacy seemed more than fitting; plus, it just plum tickled my fancy.
It was a bit sexist though for David to be the one to get to travel all the time. The empowerment of female gnomettes is long overdue.
So here we are, Nancy the Gnomette, accompanied by my partner in crime, James David the Gnome, and our fox-like dog, Zoey.
We offer this gnome/gnomette blessing from Rien Poortvliet’s book, “A Gnome’s Christmas”:
“May this year be full of proud deeds and silly games, beautiful songs and hearty feasts, clever jokes, loving friends, and enough surprises to keep us on our toes.”
